June 10
Today has been a difficult day for Brian. Shortly before 9am, his doctor called letting me know that Brian had experienced complications overnight and into the morning. A blood clot had affected his heart and it was in distress. To combat the distress, a new Venus Arterial ECMO machine was needed to support both the lungs and his heart. His ECMO machine before was just doing the work of his lungs. Now the new machine will provide support to both the heart and the lungs. With the complications to the heart, other organs were also affected. His kidneys were damaged and in need of dialysis. His bilirubin number increased to 10 mg/dL. While scanning his body, a bleed was discovered in his abdomen. His doctor strongly suggested I get to the hospital soon. Our two daughters living in Utah had planned to fly home next weekend to spend Father's Day with Brian. I asked if they should come sooner. She encouraged that they come as soon as possible. We were in a frenzy trying to communicate and make arrangements. Brian's company made arrangements for us and we just concentrated on getting to the hospital in Santa Clara.
This evening, Brian is mostly stable. He is critically ill with many complications to overcome. The next few days will be significant to see how Brian's body reacts to all of the treatments he is receiving. His doctor tonight told us that he is the most critical ECMO/Covid patient they have treated so far. She says there is still hope of him pulling through, but his chances are not good. We appreciate the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have been receiving.
So very sorry, more prayers for Brian
